Target: Clearer and far more flexible eligibility criteria for services, benefits and other support, enabling access to individually appropriate services. Because of the severe and complex nature of all autistic spectrum disorders, this is essential right across the spectrum, from those with profound and multiple disabilities to the academically gifted.
Why? Conventional service models do not meet the complex needs of people with ASD. With no specialist provision and insufficient flexibility across the providing agencies, the support offered is inappropriate or incomplete. It means that when people with ASD are assessed, the principles of ‘person-centred planning’ are not met.
Target: A specialist resource facility in West Sussex to work with a range of agencies to provide day and outreach services, social opportunities, advice, support and training.
Why? Improved services and a better understanding about autism and Asperger syndrome are needed, together with greater appreciation of the profound impact of these disorders. A fixed base and dedicated staff will be essential to focus and co-ordinate the significant change required to address this.
Other important issues, which have been raised through our public consultations, include achieving 'joined-up' working between the different services, improving the availability of information, setting up social groups, increasing access to computers, making the transition process easier and ensuring mandatory training for staff and volunteers working with people with ASD.
